SuperMoon

2012-05-04  May 5th was supposed to be “SuperMoon” day when the moon was its biggest but the forecast was for lots of cloud. So the day before I tried some shots while the sky was clear.  I found this app for my Galaxy Android phone called ‘Moon Trajectory’. It uses the phone’s camera to overlay the track of the moon for your location. This is very cool since you can see almost exactly when and where the moon will rise.

You can tell that on that night at about 19:30 the moon was in fact just over my neighbour’s house. While I did get some good moon shots that night with my 70-300, they were nothing that spectacular. Even cropped a bit the moon didn’t look much bigger.

I had in mind a great shot of the Moon over the river below our house so I walked down there and took a shot. As usual, the moon is super-bright but not super-big…so I took two shots and put them together in PhotoShop Elements. This shot is my “SuperMoon” picture, where the magnified Moon is Super-imposed over the river scene taken moments apart.

Well, as forecast the SuperMoon night of May-05 was cloudy. I did get a decent shot during a short break in the clouds.
